The Asaro Head is asymmetrical.

The left side of the caput is a simpler variant of the right side.

Hither you only see the eyeball and a apartment shape on the cheek, while on the correct side there are eyelids and more details in the cheek expanse.

The Asaro Head is asymmetrical to permit for practicing two dissimilar scenarios. A younger, more than rounded face up (left side) or an older, thinner face (right side). It can also be used to practice the bones shapes (left side) and add details later on (right side).

iii. Who Created The Asaro Head?

v. Gratuitous Asaro Head 3D Model

At present, if you don't have a real Asaro Head, don't worry because I got the next best matter for yous!

At that place's a free tool on the internet.

William Nguyen, a 3D grapheme artist on Fine art Station, created an interactive 3D model of the Asaro Caput which basically plays like a video.

Note: Information technology'due south non the exact Asaro Head – merely a symmetrical head that's very like to the Asaro Caput. The rest of the article uses this model equally a base. Information technology's just that useful for illustration purposes!

As y'all will see, it's lit by a dynamic lite source.

The cool matter is, if you click pause on the lesser left you volition be able to pull the slider to whatsoever point you lot similar.

This shows you many different lighting angles.

Beneath the head are some controls that permit you lot to freely motility the head in any management y'all desire:

asaro head 3D model controls
  • left mouse click: rotate the head
  • mouse bike: zoom in and out
  • right mouse click: move the caput
  • double click: reset to defaults

This really enables yous to see so many of the standard lighting situations:

Lighting from the front and the side, lighting from the top and the bottom and then, most importantly, lighting from the top at an angle.

These are really the lighting situations that count – that you lot tin can often encounter in nature and yous should know as an creative person.

Here you tin can really conspicuously see how light and shadow react – especially the cast shadows of the nose and the heart sockets.

Another cool matter is that you lot can really position a second calorie-free source:

  • shift + left mouse click: position second light source

Let'southward say you got light coming from the correct:

asaro head lit from the right side

You could, for example, position a second light source from the contrary direction (pictured in blue here):

asaro head lit from right and left side

This actually offers y'all the opportunity to review several lighting situations and build up on that by painting them.

I created some free Asaro Caput sketches for you to practice with.

Experience free to download them and use them as templates.

I offer JPG files, as well as TIF files (sketch + final drawing on split up layers).

7. How Do You Employ The Asaro Caput?

The Asaro Caput is used every bit a calorie-free and shadow reference for painting. Y'all can either paint the Asaro Head itself under different lighting conditions. Or you can employ information technology as a simplified model to pigment the basic lighting situation when painting a portrait.

To learn everything about painting the homo head cheque out Marco Bucci's course Agreement and Painting the Head. He uses the Asaro Caput a lot in his lessons… and he teaches you so much more than!

You'll learn how to paint all the features, and learn all about values, color and lighting.

Y'all can practice the course for free, if you do a gratis trial on Skillshare.

In that location are several dandy painting exercises you tin can do with the Asaro Head.

If y'all like videos, I describe exercises #ane to #iv in these videos:

7.i Asaro Head Exercise #i – Paint With two Values

The first exercise is to simplify the Asaro Caput by using simply two values.

Instead of using a huge value scale that goes from very bright tones to very dark tones, use just 1 brilliant tone and one dark tone.

This helps you larn the basics of shading from the ground up considering it minimizes the decisions y'all have to make:

You either make a plane bright or y'all make it dark.

The goal here is to clearly separate light and shadow.

To get amend you need to pigment many of these and do it from different angles and unlike lighting angles.

asaro head drawings filled with 2 values

So, draw it from the front, draw it from the side… so use different directions of the light source. This manner you really get a practiced feeling of how light and shadow behave on a face.

This practise is so cracking because it keeps you from thinking most advanced considerations similar midtones, reflected light, or even a second light source.

It really makes you focus on the fundamentals outset.

To make this procedure even easier yous tin retrieve about information technology in 2 steps:

First, describe the grade shadows which are shadows caused past a plane being turned away from the light:

form shadows on the asaro head
Form shadows on the Asaro Head.

Secondly, call up nigh the cast shadows which are shadows caused by an object blocking the light and throwing a shadow on the head.

In this case, the nose, the eye sockets, the lips, and the chin:

cast shadows on the asaro head
Bandage shadows on the Asaro Head.

Combining these two volition lead to the concluding production:

combining cast and form shadows on asaro head
Shadows are made up of form shadows and cast shadows.

If you have no idea at all how to do that, I take an article covering the nuts of shadows on a face up.

Y'all should notice that even using just two values these heads commencement to look somewhat 3-dimensional already.

You tin can check that past disabling the outlines, one by one:

asaro heads painted with 2 values

Can you lot see how they already look somewhat conceivable? That'southward the goal for this exercise.

seven.2 Asaro Head Do #2 – Pigment With three To 5 Values

When y'all get comfortable doing exercise #1, you can increase the difficulty by using more values.

Y'all tin do it with three values which is one step harder:

asaro head painted with 3 values

Information technology'south nonetheless doable, only information technology'south one more decision you have to brand:

Not simply 'is this plane bright or nighttime?' but 'HOW night is it?'.

And of class, the more values you lot add, the more difficult it becomes.

Only go along in mind though that I wouldn't recommend using more than 5 values because at some bespeak information technology's simply also much and defeats the purpose of the exercise which is to simplify.

Light and shadow are complicated, simply y'all can get in elementary by using only 3 to 5 values.

These exercises can really help you get the basics down fast and improve your shading speedily.

7.3 Asaro Caput Exercise #3 – Paint With A Full Value Scale

The third exercise is to paint the Asaro Head with a total value scale.

But selection i specific lighting situation you like.

Make a screenshot or photo of the caput and use that every bit your reference image.

asaro head painting from reference

In this do, you don't restrict your values anymore.

By practicing exercises #1 and #2, you lot should have gained some confidence and skill. Now you should exist able to paint a full Asaro Head with many more nuances in value.

Yous can offset with two values and go from in that location.

Add a 3rd greyness tone, then a fourth… until you lot covered every little dash in shading.

You will well-nigh likely end upwards with more 5 values.

Now, one of import note here:

Don't panic, if your painting doesn't look exactly similar your reference image. That is not the goal hither.

This is non a cartoon exercise, nor a proportion exercise, nor a perspective exercise.

This i is almost light and shadow.

Simply attempt to use it as a quick exercise for some basic light and shadow shapes and don't try to make it perfect.

7.4 Asaro Head Exercise #4 – Pigment From Retentiveness

The fourth exercise is about the same every bit the third ane.

The difference is that you don't permanently look at your reference image.

What y'all practise here is you lot expect at the reference image for a few minutes and and then switch it off.

asaro head reference image
Step 1: Pick your reference

In this case, you lot have to memorize all the shadow patterns of the confront when you attempt to replicate them in your painting.

Yous just have this basic drawing and effort to paint the light and shadow simply as they were in the reference image.

asaro head painted without reference
Step 2: Paint the Asaro Caput from memory, without the reference.

So you kind of simply go along with the process until 1 of ii things happens:

Either you fabricated a perfect painting of the Asaro Caput…

Or y'all feel like 'Homo, I don't actually know what I'yard doing here!' – and y'all're at a loss, you don't really remember all the values, so you just tin can't replicate them perfectly.

Don't worry though.

Merely switch on the reference one more time and compare what you've painted with the reference paradigm.

So you can but mark the spots that are non every bit they should be and attempt to repaint them.

In my case here, the whole correct side, the shadow area of the face, was much also bright, while some calorie-free areas were likewise dark.

mistakes in an asaro head painting
Step three: Mark your mistakes.

In essence, the separation between light and shadow was completely lost:

So, what I had to do hither was darken the right side of the confront considerably while also brightening the left side, especially the neck:

asaro head painting from reference
Step 4: Fix your mistakes!

In the stop, I think information technology'southward a very good idea to straight compare the first version of your painting with the 2d one by switching on the layer you made the changes on.

That fashion, you can clearly see what your mistakes were and yous can hopefully do improve next time.

Conclusion

If you exercise these exercises ofttimes enough, you can basically get to the point where you don't actually demand reference images anymore.

Your understanding of light and shadow will be so great that y'all can basically paint information technology from imagination.

And that'south when you tin can kind of graduate to more realistic versions of the human head – and combine this cognition most low-cal and shadow with your anatomy studies.
